Basement Flooring Ideas
f you’ll be spending a great deal of time in your renovated basement, another important detail to get right is the basement flooring. Many people will default with the concrete floor because it’s already there, but when it comes to creating a comfortable environment this may not be the best option. Ever walked on cold concrete with your bare feet? Not a great experience! One option to warm up that floor is by using basement carpeting. If you live in an area with cold temperatures in the winter time, this is a great way to go because your friends and family will be thanking you, especially if the basement is an area that will be converted to extra living space.
Another option to make the basement a little more livable is by using basement paint. If you choose to go this route, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing, use high quality latex paint otherwise you might have to deal with peeling after a few months of use.
For any of your flooring options, you want to address any moisture issues you might have in your basement. Imagine water leaking into your basement and spoiling your nice new basement carpet, it’s not a pretty picture and it’s one that can be avoided. Wet carpet can be difficult to clean completely because of the mold that can grow in the carpet fibers. This is another reason why we strongly recommend the right amount of ventilation in your basement. It’s important to have fresh air circulating your basement to keep things dry and prevent moisture build ups. In addition to keeping things dry, you’ll keep that carpet healthy and in turn you’ll increase its lifespan. Not to mention that you’ll be rid of any molds that could be a health risk to you and your family.
If we are able to correct any water leaks in your basement, a low maintenance flooring option is tile. Why? They are easy to clean, durable, and resistant to moisture and staining. As you can imagine, if there was an all you can eat buffet of tile, there would be no end. There are so many types, styles, colors, and textures of tile available! This can be great for you the consumer, but with so much availability, how do you make the right choice for you living space? Without a heated basement, tiles can be another really cold for your feet option.
We can work with you to address all of these details during the design phase of your remodeling project. It’s our goal at St. Peters Remodeling to help you get this right.
